Third Regional Seminar on Good Governance for Southeast Asian Countries
Since 2007 UNAFEI has held an annual Regional Seminar on "Good Governance" for Southeast Asian Countries, called the "GG Seminar". The aim of this Seminar is to reinforce efforts to establish the rule of law and good governance, as well as to help develop human resources in this region.
The Third GG Seminar was co-hosted by UNAFEI, the Department of Justice of the Republic of the Philippines and UNODC-RC (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Regional Centre for East Asia and the Pacific) in Manila, the Philippines, from 9 to 11 December 2009. Participants included 23 criminal justice practitioners from seven countries: the Philippines, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand. In addition to these representatives, experts from UNODC-RC, the US Department of Justice and the World Bank were also invited.
The main theme of this Seminar was "Measures to Freeze, Confiscate and Recover Proceeds of Corruption, including Prevention of Money-Laundering". Mr. Haruhiko Ukawa, Deputy Director of UNAFEI, delivered the introductory remarks, which were followed by presentations and discussions. On the last day of the Seminar, recommendations in line with the main theme of the Seminar were unanimously adopted. The Honourable Ms. Agnes VST Devanadera, the Secretary of Justice of the Republic of the Philippines, attended both the opening and closing ceremonies, and delivered ardent speeches on both occasions. The seminar closed on a high note.
