Seventh Regional Seminar on Good Governance for Southeast Asian Countries
UNAFEI has hosted the Regional Seminar on Good Governance for Southeast Asian Countries, known as the GG Seminar, annualy since 2007 in support of activities to establish the rule of law and good governance in Southeast Asian Countries, to contribute to capacity building for criminal justice practitioners, and to promote mutual understanding and cooperation among Southeast Asian countries.
The seventh GG Seminar was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 3 to 5 December 2013 under the joint sponsorship of UNAFEI and the Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission ("MACC"). Eighteen criminal justice practitioners participated from eight countries: Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. In addition to those representatives, three visiting experts from Hong Kong, Singapore and the United States attended the seminar. Datuk Hj. Mustafar bin Hj. Ali, Director of Investigation of the MACC, and His Excellency, Mr. Shigeru Nakamura, the Ambassador of Japan to Malaysia, also attended the opening ceremony of the seminar.
The main theme of this seminar was "Enhancing Investigative Ability in Corruption Cases". The Deputy Director of UNAFEI and the Director of Investigation of the MACC delivered the keynote address, which were followed by the presentations of the participants and the visiting experts. In particular, the visiting experts from Hong Kong, Singapore and the United States made detailed presentations about institutional practices and accumulated results and experiences in respective countries.Based on these presentations, the participants and visiting experts exchanged their opinions deeply during the discussion session. The Deputy Director of UNAFEI chaired the sessions, and the seminar closed on a high note, following the reading of the Chair's Summary of the discussions.
The Seminar was highly evaluated by the participants, and they were able to exchange international experiences and knowledge useful to their practice.
