The Comparative Study of Myanmar and Japan to Improve the Management of Correctional Facilities

UNAFEI conducts comparative studies with the Prisons Department of Myanmar by inviting correctional officers of Myanmar to improve the management of correctional facilities through lectures, study visits and intensive discussions regarding the challenges in the corrections practices. The main themes of the programmes have been, 1) Management of correctional facilities, 2) Prison work and vocational training, 3) Capacity-building for correctional officers, and 4) Measures against overcrowding in correctional facilities.

Prior to the comparative studies, from 2015 to 2018, UNAFEI co-organized seminars with United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Regional Office for Southeast Asia and the Pacific in Bangkok (UNODC ROSEAP) and produced a textbook for the correctional officers in Myanmar through a UNODC project which was a part of the initiatives under the UNODC's Regional Programme for Southeast Asia.
