UNAFEI Public Lecture Held at the Ministry of Justice, Japan

UNAFEI, the Japan Criminal Policy Society Foundation and the Asia Crime Prevention Foundation have collectively hosted annual public lectures on criminal justice policy at the main international conference hall of the Ministry of Justice.
Lecturers for these public lectures are mainly selected from among the visiting experts of UNAFEI's international senior seminars who have sufficient experience or expertise in the field of criminal justice.

On 29 January 2010, Visiting Experts from Germany and the United States delivered lectures at the Conference Hall of the Ministry of Justice to an audience of about 140 people, including personnel from the Ministry of Justice, Public Prosecutors Office, universities, NGOs, etc., and 23 participants of the 144th International Senior Seminar. The lectures were concluded with great success.

The lecturers and topics of the Public Lecture were as follows:

(1) Ms. Martina Peter, Director in Division R B 2, Law of Criminal Proceedings, Federal Ministry of Law, Germany
"Measures to Protect Victims in German Criminal Proceedings"

(2) Ms. Kim Herd, Chief, Victim Witness Assistance Unit, Assistant United States・Attorney, United States Attorney, Office for the District of Columbia, United States
"Assistance for Federal Crime Victims at All Stages of the Criminal Justice Process"

Ms. Peter introduced the current situation in Germany, focusing on the Second Victims・Rights Reform Act, which entered into force in October 2009. Ms. Herd reported various measures for victims of crimes at Federal Criminal Justice Proceedings and the activities of the Victim Witness Assistance Unit of the United States Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia.
